Rules for the game of Passatella.

Among all the games played in Rome, the most popular one is the game of Passatella. This game consists in paying a given sum for a certain amount of wine, shared by those who take part, and then count out a player. The counted player chooses the Master and the Under, i.e. the so-called Rulers. The Master can drink up all the wine, if he feels like doing so. The Under, when the Master allows others to drink, can either give wine to whoever he likes, or drink it himself. Those who are bound not to drink are called Elms; and being called with this name is one thing that drives you mad, even more than not drinking.
Where did the custom of playing Passatella come from?... Hum! Who knows? But some say that Passatella is a game brought here over the past century by the transalpine soldiers; in fact, it is not played only in Rome, but can be found all over Italy, with other names and other differences.
Somebody also maintains, and I believe that they are right in spite of others, that Passatella sprung from the ancient Roman custom, during a meal, of appointing the king of the feast, who distributed and exerted authority over others' drinks.
The first impression one might have is that the game is simply a pastime, but this is not true; because it contains a mixture of arrogance, abuse, and revenge. Therefore, it is not a surprise if, among the cheerful players, the game often raises grudges, moodiness, sullenness, brawls, and sometimes it even ends with a killing.
So many times the Government tried to ban it, by means of fines and detention, but always failing. In the future, the same people who now often play this game, might frown upon it; especially when everybody will realize that behaving as a tyrant, yet only within a game, is not a good thing.
Those meetings held with the purpose of ruling or, better, in order to have the wine at one's disposal, for one's own benefit, excluding others, are a real racket, whatever you may think of it. It often happens that a player who has not been allowed to drink, and later on happens to be the leader - good heavens! - drinks so much wine that he gets drunk, until he is no longer able to stand, and at the slightest scowl a fight will be put up.
In Rome we say as a joke that the body of laws of Passatella is written in the Town Hall, because until now there was no such thing. But now that we have it, since people apparently cannot do without this game, when a problem arises, let's hope that somebody will take a good look at these laws, so to prevent any blood from being shed.
I. - Er vino der giôco.

I. - The wine of the game.

Usually each player pays for one quarter of a litre, that is more or less a fair drink, i.e. one glass; but if the wine at stake is a greater or lesser quantity, it makes no difference.
Some times Passatella is played using the wine won at some other game; for instance, odds and evens, or morra; in this case the Passatella players don't have to pay at all.
Otherwise, if Passatella is played with two qualities of wine, red and white, dry or sweet, and if, say, there is a price difference, each player pays his share according to the quality he drinks.
II.

II. - The Count.

Once agreed the person from whom the count must start, each player at the same time show a certain number of fingers of a hand, and this is called throw.
The thrown fingers must be held out steadily, without wriggling until all of them have been counted, and the sum has been made; then, starting from the player numbered as one, the count proceeds from right to left, one after the other, two, three, four, etc., each player one number. He who is indicated by the last number has the right to be the Count, and he also has the right to have a drink. This drink is not measured; the Count's drink may consist in one glassful, as well as he may drink up all the wine, provided that he drinks it without stopping, nor taking a breath. The famous Secchiotto (= bucket) from via dei Serpenti, for example, was given this nickname because once he had been appointed Count, he drank in one sweep six litres of wine, which he had poured into a bucket, without taking a breath.

III.

III. - The choice of the Rulers.

The Count chooses the Rulers, i.e. the Master and the Under, taking care in naming them by word, not by pointing at them. He can choose them by saying: You are the Under: You are the Master; or by telling someone: May I drink? and the player, with this question, is considered the Under; and by telling someone else: Give us orders, with these words it is understood that the other player has been chosen as the Master.
Beware that the Under must always be chosen before the Master.
When the Count chooses the Under by asking him: May I drink?, the player whom the question suggests he is the chosen Under, replies to the Count: Drink or No. If he replies Drink, the Count, besides his right of having a drink, is granted another one, provided that the Master agrees, as well.
IV.

IV. - The Master.

The Master, as will be said in the rule concerning drinking, becomes the master of the wine as soon as the Count and the Under have had their own drink.
The Master may drink the wine in glassfuls, half glassfuls, etcetera as he prefers; but he has not the right to make another player drink. This means that when he wants to give a drink to someone else, he does so by granting a licence, as will be said further on, and then immediately after he comes again into possession of the wine, as soon as the drink has been taken.
The Master may give the Under the faculty of disposing of the wine and of the drinks.
When the wine bottles of the game have been emptied, all the drinks already served but not yet consumed become once again the Master's property, if the latter feels like claiming the wine still on the table.
This rule does not affect the wine of the drinks granted to the Count and the Under, even in the case it has been given away to someone else, because these two drinks are a right, and override the Master's decision.

Però si sse dà er caso che un giocatore mannato pe' llicenza invece de domannaje er permesso de bbeve, dice ar Sótto: passo oppure fo ppasso, allora (in 'sto caso solo) er Sótto nun pô arigalà la bbevuta a cchi je pare, e je tocca a ffàssela a llui.

V. - The Under.

As the Master disposes of the wine, in the same way the Under may dispose of the Passatella.
The Under concedes or denies the drinks, he moves them onto other players, or takes them himself: in short, the Under is the Tyrant of the game.
But if a player given license instead of asking him the permission to drink, tells the Under: I pass, in this case (and only in this one) the Under cannot give the drink to whoever he likes, but must take it himself.
VI.

Er Sótto pô ppuro arisponne ar Posso bbeve in 'sto modo: Si nun ha ssete er tale, bbeverete voi. In 'sto caso, dipenne da quer tale o a bbeve o a ddi': Nun ho ssete; o a risponne Bbevete voi; ma bbisogna annacce piano perché st'atto de generosità ve pô ffa' regge l'Ormo; e de 'st'affronto nun ve ne poteressivo lagnà ccor Sótto che vve poterebbe arisponne de bbotto: Nun v'ho ddato più dda bbeve, perché nun avevio sete. Doppo 'gni bbevuta er vino aritorna a esse robba der Padrone, che pô ribbeve, o rimannà pe' llicenza.
VI. - The drinks.

In taking a drink, each player may freely choose to have even one sip of wine only.
The drinks that are poured into the glass may be taken at the player's wish; the ones taken from a wine measure, a jug or a larger vessel, or the ones taken while pouring wine into the glass to fill it up, must be gulped all in one time, that is without catching a single breath.
The first drink goes by right to the Count, and he cannot give it away to anybody.
The second drink goes by right to the Under. Since the Under may give drinks to others, he is free to give away his own to another player, yet keeping in mind that if he takes his own by himself, he is entitled to drink in one time all the wine of the game; but wishing to give it to someone else, the drink that is due to him is only one glassful.
If the player who receives the Under's wine, provided he is later on granted a licence by the Master, tells the Under: I pass, instead of asking him for a drink, such passing is not a sign of pride, but a compliment; because with this the player has the chance of returning the drink that the Under had previously passed onto him.
Not passing, under the aforesaid condition, does not spoil the game; it is left to the player's own conscience to be or not to be unpolite.
By drinking all the wine in one time and without catching a breath, the Under has the Master hold the Elm, that is he does not let him drink.
As soon as the Under has taken his drink, the wine of the game becomes the Master's property.
If the Under has passed his drink onto some other player, by drinking all the wine the Master has also the Under hold the Elm; but it rarely happens that the Master drinks all the wine; sometimes he does not even drink at all, or after having taken one or two drinks, he gives license to whoever he likes.
The player given a license must address the Under by asking him: May I drink? The Under agrees or refuses by replying: Drink or: This player will drink, or this player will drink for you. The drink taken away from someone and given to someone else is called rebound drink, and nobody can pass upon this drink and cannot refuse to drink it. The player invited to drink may take it by simply touching the glass with his mouth; otherwise it is his right to drink it all up.
The Under may also reply: I shall drink for you, or simply say no, and drink it himself, as well. The Under may also reply to the player asking him for a drink in the following way: If this other player is not thirsty, you will drink. In this case it is up to the player who has been mentioned whether to drink or to say: I'm not thirsty; or to reply You drink it; but such a token of generosity should be carefully pondered, because it might cause you to hold the Elm; and you could not complain with the Under about this outrage, as he may reply to you straight away: I have no longer given you drinks because you were not thirsty. After each drink the wine becomes once again the Master's property, and he can drink again, or give license to someone.
While Passatella is in progress, the players are not allowed to drink any other wine but the one in the game. The people who are invited to play Passatella while they are dining are free to carry on with their food and drinks.
But no player who was not dining before the count was made is allowed to order food of any kind while the game is being played; otherwise he may find a pretext for not obeying the aforesaid rule.
The Master is free to give license more than once to the same player, as well as the Under may give more than one drink to the same person.
VII. - L'Ormo.

VII. - The Elm.

In Passatella who does not even get to taste the wine is called elm; the insult and the rage for being given this name is worse than for not drinking.
Where did the name elm spring from is difficult to tell. To understand clearly, one should bear in mind that a player who did not drink is not addressed by saying You are an elm, but You held the elm; and although it is said that this player or that player are elms, it is always understood that this player or that player held the elm.
Therefore, the player who did not drink is not likened to an elm, but is somebody who held the elm.
So, we may guess that, for instance, during a picnic in the countryside, by an elm, a party of friends had one of the members, more easily deceivable than others, support the tree by telling him: Hold the elm tight, or it will fall down, or something like that; and meanwhile they might have drunk off the wine, in his defiance.
Later on, telling the story that the guy had been left without drinking while holding the elm, the expression to hold the elm might have come into use.
However, in one way or the other, we don't really care about how the expression to hold the elm came into use; it is enough to understand what the elm in the game of Passatella is.
It is not customary to have one player alone hold the elm, but at least two of them; because to be elm alone is a great outrage, and clearly shows that between the Under and the player who held the elm there is real hatred.
When in Passatella two or more players have been elms, it is customary to give them another chance by holding the count again, i.e. by playing one more time.
VIII.

VIII. - The faults in playing.

Passatella is called a game of Voice, so that in playing nobody must express himself by gesturing, but only by means of his voice.
If, for instance, the Count chose the Master and the Under with a wave of the hand, instead of electing them by voice, after the Count's own drink, the Under would do so; but since he would have not been chosen by voice, all the players would be entitled to drink; because in this case the game would have been broken, as we say, since somebody who has not been pronounced Under has taken a drink.
When someone given licence by the Master, instead of asking the Under for a drink, says Pass or I pass, should the Under give the drink to someone else instead of drinking himself, it would be a fault; in this case the player who has passed can prevent the other player from taking the drink, having the right to drink himself without the Under's permission.
The player who drinks in a vessel larger than the glass, or who, while drinking from the glass, fills it up, is entitled to drink, as we said, as long as he does not catch a breath and keeps gulping the wine.
When he stops swallowing, what can be told by looking at his throat, he is over with his drink, and must hand over the wine; and he is not even allowed to keep the wine still in his mouth, because he might take a breath through his nostrils.
Should he continue his drink, despite having taken a breath and having been warned, he would commit a fault, and would be obliged to pay for all the wine.
If, for instance, he spills some of it by mistake while taking his drink, either while pouring the wine into his glass, or after having done so, he is forgiven; but the player who, drinking from a vessel larger than the glass, spills over himself some wine out of greediness, is not forgiven; because in this case the wine poured may go to another player. Also in this case the faulty player is obliged to pay for all the wine of the game.
Also who deliberately spills even a single drop of wine is obliged to pay for all the wine of the game.
No player can give away his drink to another player, neither in part nor as a whole; nor anybody is allowed to give any wine of the game to people who are not taking part to the same game; whoever did so would commit a serious fault, and would also be obliged to pay for all the wine.
IX.

Oppuro: Avete sete? e via dicenno. Er giocatore deve arisponne: Quanto ve ne pare a vvoi, oppuro: Averebbe sete, ma nun so ssi vvoi me date da bbeve.
Ma ssi mettiamo, a quer Quanto ve n'annerebbe, arisponesse: Un bicchiere, er Sótto direbbe: Giusto quanto me ne va a mme, oppuro: Ggiusto quanto je ne va ar tale.

the standard wine measure used in roman taverns was the

IX. - The tricks of the game.

When only one glass of wine is left, if the Master wants to let a player who has not had any wine yet drink, he can fill the glass and tell the Under: Either that player drinks, or I drink. If the Under is not acquainted with the game, or he does not want to complain with the Master, he lets that player have the drink; but almost in every case, the Under, not to be overcome, replies to the Master: Play the game, which means you play the Master and don't try to give me orders, since I am the Under; or he replies: You drink.
The Master can give licence by saying: With a slight reserve, I give licence to this player. Either the Under lets the player have the drink, or denies it, and gives it so someone else, the Master may tease the Under by saying: Stop, I made a reserve - and he drinks the wine himself.
If the Under, though, is an expert of the game, before giving the drink or denying it, he tells the Master: Drink up your reserve; with this, the Master drinks up all the wine; otherwise, once he has taken his reserve drink, the Under may give a drink to whoever he likes; provided that the player who had been given licence does not say I pass, because if he does so, the Under must take that drink himself, as has already been said.
The Under has the right to be asked for a drink in a clear and loud voice.
When he is asked for a drink, he may reply: Who can deny you this? But if the player thinks that with such a reply the Under will let him take a drink, he is quite wrong, because as soon as he places his lips on the glass, the Under tells him: Stop, I can deny you this. For this reason the player who is addressed with: Who can deny this to you? must answer back: Only you can. Almost in every case, once this answer has been given, the Under will let the player drink; but he may still deny him the drink by telling him: I'm glad you know, this player will drink in place of you.
The Under, being the Tyrant of the game, as has been previously said, can tease the players with impunity; in some cases he replies to a given license by asking: How much would you like it? Or: Are you thirsty? and so on. The player should answer: As much as you wish, or: I am thirsty, but I'm not sure whether you'll give me a drink.
In this way, with a certain flattery, one obtains the drink; but if he fails, there is no reason for being sneered at, because with this the player shows everybody that he has already understood the Under's intentions. But if, for instance, he replies to How much would you like it? by saying: One glass, the Under would say: Exactly the amount I feel like having, or: Exactly the amount that player feels like having. And should the player addressed with the question are you thirsty? reply: Indeed, the Under would say: I am more thirsty than you, though; or: that guy is more thirsty than you, though, either drinking the wine himself, or handing it over to the player to whom the drink has been given.
When there is little wine left in the game, in order to let the players who have not been given any wine yet, or a part of such players, have a drink, the Under may reply to a given licence by saying: Would you be satisfied with the amount I'd give you? If the player answers Yes, he is happy with the drink that the Under gives him, while if he wants to drink freely, he replies No; but in this case the Under would usually refuse him the drink.
Sometimes the player, trying to cheat the Under, pretending he is asking for a drink, instead of May I drink? might use a play on words. 1 If the Under does not realize this and, denying him the drink, he gives it to someone else, what happens is the same situation already described in the paragraph about the faults, when a player calls I pass. For this reason the player has the right to claim that the drinks should be asked for in a clear voice, and not blubbering.
The player who has been given license, sometimes tell the Under: If I'm not thirsty, give it to whom you want; but the Under should rebuke him by telling him: Ask for the drink in a proper way, and if the player insists with such reply, the Under drinks the wine himself. Sometimes, if the player is uncertain whether the Under will give him the drink or not, he does not ask him for it, not to endure his reply: No; so he tells him: Do as you like, you're the one in charge. In this case the Under can give the drink to whoever he likes.
When the players agree that two games of Passatella will be played, and two Counts must be selected before starting, who is counted out first chooses the Rulers before the second count is made.
The first counted player, though, chooses only the Under, without choosing the Master, in first place because he is not obliged to do so, and also because, once the second count is made, both counted players choose each others as Masters.

1 - Passo bbevi is a play on words: the player deliberately confuses Posso bbeve ("may I drink?") with Passo bbevi ("I pass - you drink"), in order to induce the Under to commit a fault.
X. - Le Passatelle in amicizia.

Ce so' ppoi certe antre Passatelle puro ppiù a la bbona fatte in quest'antro modo.
X. - The friendly Passatella.

Passatella is not always played seriously, and the rules are not always followed so strictly; because sometimes a party of friends plays Passatella merely in order to share the cost of the wine, without the need to stand on ceremony about who pays for it, of for other reasons; therefore when Passatella is played like this, there is no need to bear in mind all the rules, and everybody drinks freely. An even simpler Passatella can also be played in this other way. As soon as the Rulers have been chosen and the wine has been served on the table, the players cry out «raus!», and taking hold of a wine measure, or another, everybody starts drinking without a rule, without caring about those who remain without any wine; usually such players are the Rulers, who have to plead with others, telling them: At least, let us taste a drop of it.
If Passatella were always played like this, it would not be a disgraceful game; it would in fact show that politeness has improved it and refined it; so much so that when it is played by some people it triggers fights, while played by others it is only a bringer of jokes and merriment!
