NOTES AND DISTANCES

In the following pages, the gates and the main roads are referred to with their original names, therefore:

porta = gate via = road, street viale = avenue piazza, piazzale or largo = square

From the starting point to the end, the tour measures about 12.5 Km. - 7.5 miles, and a few diversions add further length to the already exhausting walk. Therefore, the tour has been split into three parts, each one dealing with a specific side of the wall (north, east, and south), which starts and ends by city spots easily reachable by bus or by subway.
A few distances are mentioned only in metres: since 1 yard, i.e. 3 feet, is slightly less than 1 metre (exactly 0.9144 m), you can easily turn metrical distances into yards by slightly increasing the number of metres.
Example: 100 metres = approx. 110 yards (exact conversion: 109.361 yd, or 109 yd 1 ft 1 in).
