E figurete allora tutti quelli!
Ner védeli così senza malizia,
Je cominciorno a dì: - Famo amicizia...
Viva la libertà... Semo fratelli...

E intanto l'antri su li navicelli,
Ch'aveveno sentito la notizia,
Capirno che la cosa era propizia,
Sbarcorno tutti giù da li vascelli.

E quelli je sbatteveno le mano:
E quell'antri, lo sai come succede?
Je daveno la guazza, e a mano a mano

Che veddero che quelli ci abboccaveno,
Che agiveno co' tutta bona fede,
Figurete si come li trattaveno!

XXXI
So just imagine them!
In seeing that they were so honest,
They started telling them: - Let's be friends...
Long live liberty... We are brothers...

Meanwhile, the others who were still on the ships,
Having heard about the news,
Realized that the fates were propitious,
They all went ashore.

And they [1] kept clapping their hands to them:
While the other ones, you know how things go,
Dropping every formal attitude,

Seeing that, little by little, they [1] too did in return,
And acted in good faith,
Just imagine how they treated them!

Li trattaveno come ragazzini;
Pijaveno du' pezzi de specchietti,
'Na manciata de puje, du' pezzetti
De vetro, un astuccetto de cerini...

Je diceveno: - Eh? Quanto sò carini!
- Voler controcambiare vostri oggetti? -
E tutti quanti queli poveretti
Je daveno le spille e l'orecchini.

Figurete! Ce fecero la mozza:
E lì le ceste d'oro, così arte,
Le portaveno via co' la barozza.

Eh, me fai ride! Come je le daveno?
Quanno me dichi che da quele parte
Lì li quatrini nu' li carcolaveno!

XXXII
They treated them like kids;
They took a few fragments of mirror,
A handful of tokens, a few pieces
Of glass, a box of matches...

They told them: - How nice they are, huh?
- Want change objects? - [1]
And all those poor guys
Gave them their brooches and their ear-rings.

Just imagine! They even had to leave some: [2]
Hampers full of gold, so big,
Had to be taken away with wine-carts.

You make me laugh! How could they be given that?
Since you told me that in those places
They don't use money!

[1] · These indians too speak like in old western movies,
or in cartoons!

[2] · Having so much gold to take away.

XXXIII
Perché er servaggio, lui, core mio bello,
Nun ci ha quatrini; e manco je dispiace:
Ché lì er commercio è come un girarello,
Capischi si comè? Fatte capace:

Io sò 'n servaggio, e me serve un cappello:
Io ci ho 'n abito e so che a te te piace,
Io te dò questo, adesso damme quello,
Sbarattamo la roba e semo pace.

E così pe li generi più fini,
E così pe la roba signorile;
Ma loro nun ce l'hanno li quatrini.

Invece noi che semo una famija
De 'na razza de gente più civile,
Ce l'avemo... e er Governo se li pija.

XXXIII
Because the savage man, my dear friend,
Has no money; and he's not sorry about that:
Because there trade is like a roundabout,
Do you understand? Try to get this:

I am a savage, and I need a hat:
I have a suit, and I know you like it,
I give you this, now you give me that,
We swap objects, and we are quits.

And this for the most refined goods,
This for the most elegant stuff,
But they have no money.

We, instead, who are a kind
Of much more civilized people,
We have it... and the Government takes it.

XXXIV
Ma lì nun ce sò tasse e le persone
T'agischeno secondo er naturale:
Lì nun ce trovi tante distinzione,
'Gni servaggio che vedi è un omo uguale.

Che dichi? che nun ci hanno l'istruzione?
Ma intanto sò de core e sò reale;
E tu finché lo tratti co' le bone
Nun c'è caso che lui te facci male.

Vor dì che si ce fai la conoscenza
Che quelli te spalancheno le braccia,
Be' tu nun j'hai da fà 'na prepotenza.

Si quello te viè a fatte le carezze
E invece tu je dài li carci in faccia,
Se sa, quello risponne co' le frezze.

XXXIV
But there are no taxes there, and people
Behave according to nature:
There is no discrimination there,
Any savage you see has equal rights. [1]

What? They've got no instruction?
But nevertheless, they are more honest and genuine;
And as long as you treat them kindly
There's no chance they will harm you.

This means that if you get to know them
Up to the point that they open their arms to you,
Well, you ought not to mistreat them.

Instead, if he comes to give you a caress
And you kick him in the face,
It's obvious, he will reply by using arrows.

E così finì lì; che venne er giorno
Che quelli cominciorno a annà in gattaccia:
E quell'antri je diedero la caccia,
E venne er giorno che ce l'acchiapporno.

E allora, se capisce, cominciorno
Le lite, e dopo venne er vortafaccia:
Quelli je seguitorno a ride in faccia;
Ma quell'antri, lo sai?, je la cantorno.

Dice: lassamo perde le servagge,
Si no, dice, mannaggia la miseria,
'Na vorta o l'antra qui nasce 'na stragge!

Ma quelli... quelli, invece seguitaveno,
E allora diventò 'na cosa seria,
Perché le donne, poi, quelle ce staveno.

XXXV
So things ended up this way; the day came
When they [1] started chasing women:
And the other ones took up their stand,
Until one day they discovered them.

And then, of course, brawls began
To rise, and their attitudes changed:
They [1] kept mocking them;
But the other ones, you know, gave them tit for tat.

So they [1] said: let's leave savage women alone,
Otherwise, damn! one of these days
There's going to be a slaughter!

Instead... they went on and on,
And things grew serious,
Because women, well, they started liking it.
